Outdoor Fireplace vs Fire Pit — Which Should You Get?
Outdoor fire features provide hours of entertainment and relaxation. There is simply nothing like enjoying a glass of wine, a cup of cocoa, or roasting s’mores in the comfort and convenience of your own home. Both fire pits and fireplaces add value to your home, which helps with your resale value.
We recommend fireplaces over fire pits for a couple of reasons. One, you and your guests will enjoy the fireplace more because the design of the fireplace lifts smoke into the air, rather than allowing it to blow around your yard.
You can still build your outdoor fireplace to accommodate plenty of seating, using an L-shaped, circular or rectangular built-in seating. Add to that your own patio furniture, and this summer, the BBQ is at your house.
A well-designed and well-built fire pit can also be a good option, especially if you have a lot of tall trees or limited space. Fire pits are better if you have small spaces. If budget is a concern, the fire pit can also be a better option. If you’re looking for return on your investment, however, go with the fireplace. It will net hours of entertainment and if and when you sell your home, it will be a selling point for potential buyers.

L-Shaped Fire
An L-shaped fireplace is just how it sounds: It’s short on one side and long on the other. Typically they are seen in indoor fireplaces in a corner setting. You can also have an L-shaped fireplace outdoors. It’s perfect for incorporating into full landscape designs to feature separate seating areas and for backyards intended for large gatherings.
An L-shaped fire pit is also just as it sounds. It’s like a small fire pit fused with a long fire pit to create an L-shape and it’s great if you want to increase seating areas around your fire pit.
Circular Fire Pits
Standard to your typical campfire, the round fire pit gives everyone in the group the ability to sit and engage with each other while enjoying the flames and warmth equally. The downside is the wind, which is out of your control.
Rectangular Fire Pits and Fireplaces
Outdoor fireplaces and fire pits can be designed in a rectangular configuration as well. Longer on two sides and shorter on the other two, the rectangular fire feature can be a stunning addition to your outdoor entertainment.
